Plea for Pollard

Arutz7 News - July 17, 2002

Former Israeli Chief Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu, who has been very active on behalf of Jonathan Pollard, has asked once again to emphasize the importance of working for Pollard's release from prison. Rabbi Eliyahu visited Pollard in his North Carolina prison cell at least twice, and has offered to personally intervene with the American government in order to request his release.

In a letter he wrote to Pollard's attorney Larry Dub, Rabbi Eliyahu states:

"In response to the question that others have asked you, namely whether the mitzvah of Pidyon Shvuyim [the commandment to redeem captives] is relevant in the case of the above-named [Jonathan Pollard]:

"Those who ask, should themselves be asked how they could have any doubt. It should be clear that this is a great mitzvah [commandment] and that it is the obligation of all Israel, no matter where they may be, to do everything that they can to assist and to aid with all their strength and all their means to free the honorable Jonathan Pollard, may G-d watch over him and protect him, who sacrificed himself for the good of and in order to save all of the nation of Israel..."
