Israeli agent Jonathan Pollard was hospitalized on Wednesday after a deterioration of his medical condition and underwent surgery, apparently related to his intestines, sources close to him said Thursday night.

Pollard, 59, had been suffering from various medical ailments and extreme pain for an extended period of time. His health has deteriorated over the course of the nearly 28 and a half years he has been in prison.

"He had surgery to fix multiple serious complications in his digestive system," Esther Pollard said about her husband. "His condition is worrisome. He is worn out. I'll only know more details when he is well enough to tell me."

The long list of ailments that he has suffered from over the years include diabetes, nausea, dizziness, blackouts and ongoing issues with his gall bladder, kidneys, sinuses, eyes and feet. He also suffers from Meniere's disease, which causes him to lose consciousness and fall without warning.

A rally was held outside the US embassy in Tel Aviv Thursday night asking for US President Barack Obama to commute Pollard's life sentence to time served. Esther Pollard prayed for his health and freedom Thursday at the Western Wall.
