A Jewish Agency conclave consisting of the heads of Jewish communities in Israel and around the world, called on U.S. President Barack H. Obama to act immediately to free Jonathan Pollard from prison. The call was made at a meeting of top Jewish Agency officials in Jerusalem Tuesday.
In a unanimous decision, the group said that as Pollard approaches the end of his 28th year in a U.S. prison, serving a life sentence, his health has been failing and his physical condition has seriously deteriorated. After years in prison, he suffers from many diseases, and he continues to worsen. The Jewish Agency calls for the immediate release of Pollard on humanitarian grounds, and asks the President, Barack Obama, to grant him a pardon immediately."
Natan Sharansky, chairman of the Jewish Agency, said that "today, there is a growing consensus to free Pollard among officials in the Pentagon, former CIA officials, attorneys, community leaders, the Israeli government, and the heads of Jewish communities in the U.S.
"The time has come to call for his freedom in a loud voice," Sharansky said, adding "28 years is far too long."
