Former Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who for many years was one of the most vocal opponents of releasing Israeli agent Jonathan Pollard, intends to publicly change his tune, McCain told Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Thursday.

Netanyahu said he would continue his recent public efforts to persuade US president Barack Obama to commute Pollard's life sentence to the more than 25 years he has already served.

McCain's endorsement of clemency for Pollard would give the effort a boost, because the Arizona senator worked against Netanyahu's efforts to persuade then-president Bill Clinton to release Pollard as part of the Wye River Accord.
