Knesset Speaker Again Calls for Goussinsky's Release; Again Ignores Pollard

(Communicated by the Knesset Spokesman)

IMRA - Jerusalem - Wednesday, March 21, 2001

The Knesset today (Wednesday), 21.3.2001, expressed its concern over the continued house arrest in Spain of Russian media magnate Vladimir Goussinsky in the context of a continuing campaign to restrict the rights of free speech and a free press in Russia, and the continued use of threats and pressure against Mr. Goussinsky's employees by the Russian authorities.

Knesset Speaker Avraham Burg has spoken with his Spanish counterpart and condemned the detention of Mr. Goussinsky which he views as political persecution with clear anti-Semitic overtones.

The Knesset appeals to Spanish MPs, the Spanish government and the citizens of Spain to support free speech and an independent media in Russia.

IMRA gain notes IMRA notes the a stark contrast between Knesset Speaker Burg's concern for Russian media magnate, Vladmir Goussinky, and his complete indifference to the plight of Israeli agent Jonathan Pollard who is serving his 16th year of a life sentence in an American prison.

Here is what Burg had to say about Pollard:

The Knesset Speaker's spokeswoman, Ayelet Frisch stated: "Avraham Burg never dealt with and never touched the matter of Jonathan Pollard. He does not believe that he personally as Knesset Speaker has to act on behalf of Pollard."
