Knesset Speaker Calls for Goussinsky's Release; Ignores Pollard

IMRA - March 14, 2001

IMRA received the following communique from the Knesset Spokesman today, Wednesday, March 14, 2001:

Knesset Speaker Avraham Burg views the continued detention in Spain of prominent Russian media magnate Vladimir Goussinsky with utmost severity and as part of a political campaign against the rights of free speech and free media activity in Russia.

Knesset Speaker Burg calls for Goussinsky's immediate release.

IMRA notes the a stark contrast between Knesset Speaker Burg's concern for Russian media magnate, Vladmir Goussinky, and his complete indifference to the plight of Israeli agent Jonathan Pollard who is serving his 16th year of a life sentence in an American prison. Here is what Burg had to say about Pollard:

"The Knesset Speaker's spokeswoman, Ayelet Frisch stated: Avraham Burg never dealt with and never touched the matter of Jonathan Pollard. He does not believe that he personally as Knesset Speaker has to act on behalf of Pollard."
Yediot Ahronot - February 23, 2001

Burg's indifference to Jonathan Pollard came to light during the public scrutiny of his strong support of a US presidential pardon for fugitive financier Marc Rich.
