Norwegians Call for Pollard's Release

Justice4JP Release - June 16, 2000

Justice4JP received the following message today from Odd Sverre Hove, a Norwegian journalist and editor of the newspaper "DAGEN", announcing a postcard campaign for the release of Jonathan Pollard that is being launched in Norway.

Dear Esther Pollard,

Below I forward to you an e-mail which contains the text of a planned postcard-campaign in Norway. And please notice: I am not the one heading the campaign. I am only the journalist telling you about it.

Behind the campaign is Friends of Israel in several Norwegian organizations. I understand the campaign is starting more or less next week. A demonstration outside the US Embassy in Oslo is also planned for June the 30th at 13:00. My newspaper Dagen is printing the English postcard text on Wednesday (I hope). And for tomorrow's newspaper I have written a short editorial recommending the campaign.

Shabbat Shalom to you from Bergen, Norway.

Yours,
Odd Sverre Hove
Chief Editor of Dagen

Dear Mr. President,

I join the millions of people worldwide who appeal to you to review the unusually harsh sentence inflicted on Jonathan Jay Pollard. I believe that Jonathan Pollard's immediate liberation would not only prove your sense of justice but also your consideration to Mr. Yitzhak Rabin as one of his last public request to you was Jonathan Pollard's liberation.

I neither condone acts of espionage nor contest Mr. Pollard's guilt. Nevertheless, compared with other similar cases of espionage I believe that the sentence is grossly disproportionate to the charge held against him i.e. transmission of classified documents to a foreign nation, in this instance an American ally, Israel.

I strongly urge you to commute Jonathan Pollard's sentence to time already served.

Sincerely,
