Israeli Parliament Unanimously Calls on Clinton to Free Pollard

Justice4JP Media Release - May 24, 2000

The Israel Knesset yesterday unanimously passed a resolution calling on President Clinton to grant clemency to Jonathan Pollard and release him immediately.

The Knesset also called on Prime Minister Barak to make Israel's call for Pollard's release a top priority in his contacts with President Clinton.

The resolution was initiated by the head of the Knesset Lobby for Pollard, MK Rechavam Ze'evi (head of the National Unity Party), and follows on the heels of a prison visit to Jonathan Pollard by three MKs: Rechavam Ze'evi, Dani Naveh, and Yuli Edelstein.

The resolution was jointly sponsored by all of following parties: Likud, National Unity, Israel Beiteinu, Shaas, Shinui, Yisrael Ba'Aliya, Herut, NRP( Mafdal), and Yahadut Ha'Torah.

Forty-eight MKs, representing every party, signed up to speak to the issue. Jonathan Pollard's wife, Esther, attended the Knesset session as a special guest of the Knesset. She received warm personal greetings for her husband from Knesset Members representing the full spectrum of political parties. Mrs. Pollard was gratified by the overwhelming support that the Knesset lends to the issue of her husband's release and repatriation.
