Jonathan Pollard Shares A Letter From His Wife

November 7, 1996

Esther Pollard wrote the following letter to her husband in regard to a vicious article ("We Don't Blame Jonathan", Ha'aretz, November 1, 1996). The article, full of distortions and outright lies, was a thinly veiled attempt to silence Jonathan by attacking his voice on the outside, his wife.

Jonathan asked his wife to share this letter by positing it on their web site.

My Beloved Jonathan,

The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that what popped into my mind and came out of my mouth when we were speaking earlier this morning is true: the attack article in Ha'aretz is a good thing, and we can be happy about it. I like how you summed up my explanation: "The article is an indictment! They've written their own indictment!" I could not have put it better.

Imagine. The whole cast of characters who have sabotaged and undermined the fight for freedom and justice are publicly declaring their destructive deeds, all in one document.

I can't help but believe that this was no mere coincidence, no mere random event. I am convinced that we are on the threshold of redemption, and Ha'Shem, has purposefully allowed these misguided people to boast of their destructive deeds, long, loud, and in unison, so that they may, in fact, indict themselves!

What a line-up! The Government; the Mossad; the "misguided"; the ex-lawyer; the prison - all showing their hand moments before Truth emerges to smite them all. They have done us an enormous favor!

Ever since the article came out, the thing I thought about the most is how excessive it was. I couldn't shake that thought. And I just knew that that was the issue. At first I didn't understand why., but I just kept coming back to it over and over again. Now I understand and so do you. This article will be the definitive document regarding the Jewish "effort" to rescue you; the definitive indictment for the last 11 years - and it was written by the perpetrators themselves.

My beloved husband, you know as well as I do that the fight we are fighting is much greater than our own personal lives. You know that we are fighting for truth. We are fighting for Kidush Ha'Shem. We are fighting to reinstate Ha'Shem on His Throne of Glory (for when evil reigns, Ha'Shem cannot sit on His Throne. He has been "de-throned", so to speak, by evil).

That is why this article is more than just an article, and more than just an indictment. It is a historical document in the battle for truth. It, like this entire "parsha", is a piece of Jewish history.

It is helpful for us to remember that measure for measure ("mida K'neged mida"), the actions, words and deeds of every nation, government, group and individual will be requited over time. The consequences of each one's behaviour - for good or for evil - will be repaid to the doer just as surely as a pebble tossed into a brook causes ripples that ultimately affect the entire universe and cause repercussions that eventually return to affect not only the brook, but also the pebble and the pebble-tosser. So it is with every word, action, thought, thought and deed that is done in this world. Its consequences return to the source - always and forever.

Not that we shall rejoice at the downfall of the people in question. Not that we shall take any pleasure in their ultimate reaping of what they have sown. Rather, we shall weep over the tragedy that Jewish souls could ever be enmeshed in such evil, and we shall comfort ourselves only in the triumph of truth over falsehood and the reinstatement of the King of the Universe upon his Throne of Glory.

In the meantime, we must be strong. We must endure. We may not fear as we walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death. Rather, constantly remember that Ha'Shem is with us, as we are with Him. Ha'Shem's seal is truth. His word is Truth. Only Ha'Shem prevails over all else. We seek only to sanctify his Name and His Word.

Surely we shall prevail.

All my love, your own,
Esther
