Pollard Wedding Announced To Renew Focus On Case

May 26, 1994 - The Jerusalem Post

Jonathan Pollard, the US naval intelligence analyst serving a life sentence for spying for Israel, recently married Elaine Zeitz.

"Jonathan and I were married at Butner, North Carolina, during one of my visits," Elaine Zeitz Pollard said yesterday. "Our original intent was to keep the marriage private, but our future circumstances compel us to reveal our secret."

Zeitz Pollard said their decision to reveal their marriage, which is Pollard's second, was an effort to combat the "facade of quiet diplomacy, which is burying Jonathan alive."

Zeitz Pollard cited President Clinton's refusal to grant her husband clemency this winter as the ultimate factor working against her husband's chances for parole. Clinton's rejection was preceded by a personal plea from Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in November and the lobbying of many American Jewish groups.

Pollard has been imprisoned since 1985, and his term has included more than five years in solitary confinement.
