Prisoner Swap

November 12, 1993 - The Jerusalem Post

Israel's best chance for a prisoner swap for Jonathan Pollard may have been lost last week when Yosef Amit, an American caught spying on Israel, was released by Israeli courts.

The Amit case seemed to have been heaven sent, as an incident that would finally balance the scales. One would think that it would make it easier for the Israeli government to request that the US end the extended period for which Pollard has been held. Sadly, that has not been the case.

Since Pollard's arrest in 1985, Israeli authorities have tried to push the incident under the rug, by saying Pollard was part of a rogue operation, in order not to cause undue harm to American-Israeli relations.

It is about time Israel stands behind one of her true heroes and pressures the US government to free Jonathan Pollard in view of the Yosef Amit affair.
