Rep. Eliot Engel Seeks Meet With Attorney General on Pollard

Congress of the United States
House of Representatives
Washington, DC 20515-3217

August 5, 1993

The Honorable Janet Reno
Attorney General
United States Department St., NW
Washington, DC 20530

Dear Ms. Attorney General:

I am writing concerning the case of Jonathan Pollard. I and many of my former colleagues in the New York State Assembly feel that while Mr. Pollard committed a very serious crime, his punishment has been unfairly severe. In addition, a number of legitimate questions have been raised about the original judicial process which resulted in a life sentence being handed down.

In light of these concerns, I and a delegation from the New York State Assembly would greatly appreciate a meeting with you to discuss Mr. Pollard's case in more detail. We feel that this is a timely and important issue that in the interests of justice we can no longer afford to ignore.

Thank you for your consideration of my request. I look forward to your response to my Washington office.

Sincerely,
(signed)

Eliot L. Engel
Member of Congress
