In a Fox News interview on the eve of receiving the US Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama, President Shimon Peres is challenged by interviewer, Bret Baier, about his intention to seek clemency from President Obama for Jonathan Pollard. Peres acquits himself well in his response. He does not argue on the basis of the grossly disproportionate sentence Pollard is serving, or on the basis of prosecutorial misconduct. Rather, he cites extra-judicial grounds for seeking Pollard's release and he explains that as one who is very familiar with the clemency process, there are issues that a president may deal with that are outside of the court's purview. Peres makes a strong statement when he declares that his advocacy for Pollard is not political or diplomatic, but made simply as a human being out of sheer decency.
